Turning Queensland electrical safety guidance into action

At GC Electrical Safety, our ongoing commitment to safe, professional electrical contracting work includes maintaining our knowledge, reviewing our procedures and undertaking continuing professional development.

Following our review of the latest Queensland Electrical Safety Commissioner communiqué and supporting Electrical Safety Office guidance, we completed a practical review of our field procedures, service boundaries, test-equipment checks and digital records.

This is part of an ongoing process—not a one-off response. Electrical safety guidance, equipment and workplace risks continue to evolve. We believe professional development should translate into practical improvements in how work is planned, performed, recorded and explained to customers.

GC Electrical Safety operates under Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 1506979. All work remains subject to the authorised scope of the applicable licence and competencies.

Portable RCD testing only

We have clarified that our RCD testing service applies specifically to portable, plug-connected RCDs and portable RCD power boards.

GC Electrical Safety does not test switchboard-mounted or fixed-installation RCDs, open switchboards, test fixed wiring, alter wiring or undertake work outside the exact scope of our licence and competencies.

A documented isolation and lockout procedure

We have introduced a dedicated isolation and lockout procedure for portable and plug-connected equipment.

Before testing begins, applicable supplies must be identified, safely disconnected and controlled against inadvertent reconnection.

Testing stops if safe isolation cannot be established or if the work would require access to fixed wiring, a switchboard or exposed electrical parts outside our authorised scope.

Checking for alternate supplies

Our job-start process now includes a specific question about alternate or additional energy sources.

These may include:

• UPS systems
• generators and inverters
• batteries or solar supplies
• equipment with multiple power leads
• remote-start or control connections
• capacitors, pressure or other stored energy

If an alternate supply cannot be positively identified and safely controlled, work stops until the situation can be properly assessed.

Stronger test-equipment checks

Our pre-start checks now formally record the identification, condition and marked CAT rating of applicable Metrel test leads and accessories.

Damaged, contaminated, incorrectly rated or unidentified test equipment will not be used.

More complete digital records

We are checking our PATLink configuration and exported reports to ensure appropriate records retain:

• equipment or asset identification
• inspection and test date
• identity of the person performing the test
• applicable test readings and units
• visual-inspection outcome
• final test outcome
• defects and relevant comments
• tester identification
• next scheduled test date

This supports better traceability, clearer reporting and more useful records for our customers.

Clear boundaries for electrical work

GC Electrical Safety has adopted a simple and firm rule:

No opening switchboards, testing fixed wiring or installation RCDs, altering wiring, or undertaking work outside the exact authorised scope—regardless of customer request, convenience or schedule pressure.

When a job requires work outside our service scope, we recommend Big Daddy Electrical for switchboards, fixed wiring, installation RCDs, electrical repairs, maintenance and other fully licensed electrical work.
