What counts as a billable item?

An item is one independently testable piece of mains-powered equipment, detachable cord, extension lead, power supply or power board that requires its own inspection, test record and identification.

The number of tests does not equal the number of items. One appliance may require several electrical tests but remain one billable item. Equipment requiring a longer or specialist sequence is priced under the relevant category below.

Standard-item examples

One item

  • An appliance with a permanently attached mains lead
  • An extension lead
  • A standard power board
  • A plug-pack or external power supply with fixed pins

More than one item

  • An appliance and its detachable IEC lead: two items
  • A desktop tower, monitor, two detachable leads and power board: five items
  • A charger with a detachable mains lead: charger plus lead, two items

USB-powered keyboards, mice and similar extra-low-voltage peripherals are not normally separate PAT items. If equipment has several independently removable mains components, each testable component is counted separately.

Why a portable RCD is one specialist item

A portable RCD normally receives one identification tag and is recorded as one asset. It may nevertheless require several checks—such as visual inspection, polarity, protective-earth continuity, insulation or leakage testing, and RCD operating tests as applicable. It is therefore priced as one specialist RCD item, not as a standard $7 item and not as several separate items.

Access and equipment movement

The published prices assume equipment is safely accessible and ready for testing. Normal access and minor repositioning are included. Additional charges may apply when testing requires substantial furniture or equipment movement, dismantling, production shutdown coordination, repeated reconnection, difficult access or additional labour.

Additional access labour: $110 per hour GST inclusive, charged in 15-minute increments after approval. Heavy, unstable or unsafe equipment will not be moved by the technician unless suitable assistance and controls are available. Any foreseeable additional charge will be discussed before the work proceeds.
